The Lightning connector on Apple® products has slightly different pins for charging than a typical USB-C port. However, cleaning an iPhone charging port or an iPad USB-C charging port is straightforward:

  • Turn off your smartphone and clean the charging port with a can of pressurized air or a bulb syringe. Use a few quick bursts to see if any dust is expelled. Using compressed air, keep the can upright to prevent water from entering the port.
  • Restart your smartphone and try to charge the battery. If the gadget still won’t charge, switch it off and use a toothpick to scrape or remove any debris from the port carefully. Be cautious about performing this under an intense light so you can see what you’re doing, and proceed gently to avoid breaking the toothpick.
  • Spray the pressurized air or bulb syringe again to remove the dust particles that the toothpick has dislodged. Then, reactivate your iPhone or iPad and observe whether it charges.
